Figure/Ground

Figure/Ground is a two person exhibition of black and white photography exploring a relationship between the human subject and the natural landscape. The two artists in the exhibition, Sam Warner and Kelly Brant, are both currently making work that features both the human body and the world around us. However, they are approaching these subjects in vastly different ways. In Warner’s work, the viewer is asked to consider both the individual and one’s place within the world. The human subject is located sometimes in plain view within the frame, and sometimes is hidden within the surrounding environment. Warner uses the landscape to aid in formal composition of the works, but it also serves to give information about the behavior or psychological state of the viewer.
